We didn't realize the importance of Gander on 9/11 International flights that couldn't land in the US (a lot of them) flew to Gander. People were there almost a week. A village of 6000 people suddenly grew to thousands. Villagers gave their homes, food, and whatever was needed. Walmart (we shopped there) gave tents and supplies at no cost to the stranded people.
A gentleman was using the high school computer room to do some work with a couple employees. When he left, they found he was the head of the Rockafeller Foundation and he gave the school new computers.
